Mary Trump Sounds Alarm on ‘Unconscionable’ Reaction to Donald Trump

Mary Trump, the estranged niece of President Donald Trump, voiced concern on Saturday about the “unconscionable” reaction from some Democrats to her uncle.

Newsweek has reached out to the White House via email for comment on Sunday morning.

Why It Matters

Mary Trump, a psychologist and media personality, has long been a staunch critic of her uncle’s, issuing often dire warnings about the risk he poses to the government and the country. Through her podcast, books, Substack and mainstream media appearances, she has built much of her personal brand around opposition to her uncle and his political movement.

Democrats have long been critical of Trump as they have warned about his policies on the campaign trail. However, since his electoral victory last year, some Democratic lawmakers have begun discussing areas where they might find common ground with the president.

What To Know

On Saturday in a Substack post titled, “There Is No Worst/Opposition in the Age of Accommodation,” Mary Trump spoke about how “unconscionable” it is to accommodate Trump as she critiqued Democrats for choosing to “become accommodationists.”

“It’s inexcusable for those who know better to normalize them, but it’s unconscionable to accommodate them. Too many Democrats are playing that game and what we need to do, what we need to admonish them to do, is start saying, ‘Take it all out of my house!’ And then we can move forward,” Mary Trump wrote.

She added: “For over a year, our leaders told us how dangerous another Trump administration would be. They warned us about the encroaching fascism that was poised to throttle our democracy. But as soon as our side lost, many of these people relinquished much of the power they still possessed or exited the stage or chose to become accommodationists to one degree or another.”

While the president’s estranged niece didn’t specify which Democrats she is referring to, several including Representative Debbie Dingell of Michigan and independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who caucuses with Democrats, have signaled there are certain policy areas they would work with Trump on, such as raising the federal minimum wage and capping credit card interest rate limits.

Several Democratic governors, meanwhile, have also gone against Trump as they have promised to protect undocumented migrants in their communities against his mass deportations using sanctuary laws that have prevented local officials and law enforcement from assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Many of the governors and city mayors have voiced concerns over the logistics of such an operation, which will seek to target at least 11 million undocumented migrants.

When it comes to mass deportations, a New York Times/Ipsos poll, carried out from January 2 to 10, found 55 percent of voters strongly or somewhat supported such plans. Eighty-eight percent supported “deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have criminal records.” Large majorities of Democrats and Republicans agreed that the immigration system is broken.

What People Are Saying

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who caucuses with Democrats, said in December about working with Trump on raising the federal minimum wage: “I hope that we can work in a bipartisan way to finally accomplish that goal.”

Representative Jared Moskowitz, a Florida Democrat, told NPR in December about joining the Republican-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) House caucus: “On some issues I’m progressive. On other issues I’m conservative, and I think that’s how most of my constituents are. We take it issue by issue.”

Yassamin Ansari, a Democrat who represents Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House has emerged as a vocal critic of the administration’s actions regarding immigration, previously told Newsweek: “I find all of Trump’s proposed policies on this topic to be outrageous. The reality of the matter is that Democrats, alongside Republicans, agree that we need comprehensive immigration reform and we need a secure border. None of the policies that Trump has proposed address these issues.”

Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, who represents the San Fernando Valley in California and chairs the Assembly Budget Committee, previously told Newsweek regarding the incoming administration and mass deportation: “We need to be prepared, and while we hope to collaborate and avoid litigation, we have a responsibility to California residents and taxpayers to make sure we’re not caught flat-footed.”

What Happens Next

As Trump continues to enact policies, it’s unclear how many of these policies will have bipartisan support.
