A man who moved with his family into a new home a couple of weeks ago was surprised to discover a note in his mailbox from a neighbor he has never even met.

Moving home can be an emotional experience for both good and bad reasons. A Zillow survey of just over 1,000 adults found 36 percent of sellers said the process left them in tears. Of those who cried, 20 percent admitted to crying five times or more.

When Bruno Silva and his family moved into their new home in Kansas City, Missouri, it was an emotional experience, but in a good way.

“My family and I moved houses late November,” Silva told Newsweek. “We were excited to move from a small starter home to a larger house in an old neighborhood in the city.”

What’s made him especially emotional, however, has been the welcome his family has received from other local residents.

“We knew there were some families in the area but the way we’ve been welcomed by multiple neighbors has blown us away,” he said.

“We had three neighbors come knock at the door to introduce themselves, some with their kids alongside. One of them even brought us a small present along with a holiday card.”

Yet arguably his most emotional response was reserved for the heartfelt note one neighbor sent him a couple of weeks after the move in the run-up to the busy Christmas holidays.

What made it all the more special was that he hasn’t even met this neighbor yet.

The handwritten note reads:

Silva said the note was written on the back of a Christmas card and caught him off guard and made him feel “blessed and privileged.”

“I didn’t know what to expect from the neighborhood I was moving in, but I have only seen folks going out of their way to make my family feel welcomed,” he said. “I decided to share it because I wanted other people to feel some of the goodness and kindness I’ve been offered.”

Silva posted the note to Reddit under the handle u/alleycatbiker, where it drew a variety of responses.

“That’s awesome! This is how you know you have great neighbors, and that’s worth the move!” one user commented. “Wish more neighbors were like this. Just moved to a new state and my neighbors seem so stuffy,” another said.

One lamented “I always MEAN to do something like this but I tend to never quite get around to it” while another said: ” I just moved and made Christmas treats for my neighbors. It felt SUPER awkward dropping them off since I don’t know them… this made me smile knowing they probably smiled about it, regardless of my social awkwardness.”

There were those who had mixed emotions though.

“This is a very kind gesture!! Hope your new neighborhood is an amazing experience,” one Reddit commented, adding: “Curious though, Why didn’t they knock and introduce themselves or why not place it on your door? It’s a federal offense to mess with other people’s mailboxes.”

Silva chose to see it in a positive light and is currently planning a time to meet the neighbors who sent the note. “The weather has been rough the last couple of weeks here, I haven’t yet met the nice neighbors who’ve sent the letter,” he said. “But I’m sure I will pretty soon.”
