Live-Action ‘Street Fighter’ Casts Horror Star as Chun-Li

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

According to a report from Deadline, Callina Liang, one of the stars of Steven Soderbergh’s slow-burning horror film “Presence”, is joining the cast of Legendary Pictures’ “Street Fighter” as the iconic Chun-Li.

Chun-Li is one of the most recognizable characters in the “Street Fighter” franchise, who first appeared in the 1991 game “Street Fighter II”. Like most of the game’s characters, she’s a martial arts expert and she also happens to be an Interpol officer.

Liang joins a cast that already includes Jason Momoa, Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Roman Reigns, and Orville Peck. Kitao Sakura is helming the film.

Of all the cast revealed so far, Liang is the only actor whose role has been unveiled. We have yet to learn who Momoa, Koji, Centineo, Reigns, or Peck are playing in the adaptation.

Capcom

There is no word yet on writers or producers for the video game adaptation, and the plot is still being kept tightly under wraps.

The “Street Fighter” games first launched in 1987 and it’s spawned numerous sequels and spinoffs. Capcom has sold over 55 million units of the various titles, rendering it one of the most popular and profitable game franchises in the world.

The games usually revolve around a global fighting competition organized by the villainous M. Bison. Along with being experts in the martial arts, many of the competitors exhibit supernatural abilities.

Ming-Na Wen played the role of Chun-Li in the 1994 live-action “Street Fighter” that was written and directed by Steven E. de Souza. She was joined in the flick by Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, and Wes Studi among others.

The 1994 “Street Fighter” may not be a cinematic masterpiece – it has an absolutely horrible 11% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it put butts in seats. It made $100 million globally against a $35 million production budget, and reportedly continues to put millions in Capcom’s coffers.

Liang so far has a young but impressive career. Along with starring beside Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan in “Presence”, the Canadian actress has appeared in AppleTV+’s “Foundation”.

She also starred in the short-lived teen drama “Tell Me Everything”, and led the 2024 thriller “Bad Genius”.
