Hearts Melt As Owner Told To Keep Kittens Apart, but They Have Other Plans

A woman who adopted two kittens from different litters was warned to keep them apart until they got used to each other—but the pair seemed desperate to meet.

Breanna, who posts to TikTok under the username @breannavanloo, shared a short clip on May 7, where she said: “Help, we adopted two kittens the same age from different litters and were told to keep them separate.

“I think they want to be friends,” Breanna added.

In the video, a tabby-and-white paw appears from underneath a door and starts waving, as if trying to get someone’s attention or initiate play. And, immediately, a tiny black kitten rushes the door, sticking its nose under to see what’s on the other side, its body language in full play mode.

Breanna wrote in the caption: “Please help, they told us to keep them apart for four days minimum. It’s breaking my heart, can I let them meet?”

Generally, owners should introduce cats to a new kitten in the home slowly and patiently, first keeping them separated entirely while giving them a chance to get used to each other’s scents, according to a vet-reviewed article on PetMD.

Keep an eye on the cats’ body language when they get used to each other from behind a door: if their ears are flattened, their fur standing on end, or their body posture rigid, this is negative body language, and things should not progress just yet.

If the body language is positive, next steps include giving each feline access to the other’s space without them being there, then letting them meet through a barrier such as a mesh screen, and then conducting supervised introductions.

In the case of Breanna’s kitten, it was clear that her body language was positive: the black ears are pointed forwards and her posture loose. Introducing kittens is easier than introducing cats; they are more adaptable, playful and curious, and unlikely to have strong territorial instincts.

TikTok users flocked to the video, watching it over 1.3 million times and awarding it more than 233,000 likes, as one user said: “You don’t have to keep them apart for four days, especially if they seem like they are fine with each other. It’s just recommended to have a slow introduction in case they hate each other.”

Another posted: “This is a great sign, but not a sign to rush anything! The slower and steadier you keep introductions, the better they go overall.”

But, as one viewer pointed out: “It might be less with introducing them and more for medical reason. If one has any sickness it would show up in those four days. You don’t want to transfer diseases if you don’t have to.”

Breanna said in the comments that both kittens had been neutered the day before, and one had appeared to have diarrhea—so she would “see how things progress” for now.

And, a few days later, she shared another video, this time of the kittens getting to meet in person, and instantly hitting it off, playing together as Breanna kept a close eye on them both.

She wrote in a comment: “They love each other now, it’s the cutest thing. They’ve been racing around my apartment all morning.”
