After allowing her orange cat to have water from the sink once, a pet owner from Minnesota immediately regretted her decision. What the feline now does every time he wants water has left internet users in stitches.
In a viral TikTok video shared on Friday under the username @graceajacobs, the cat, Kirby, can be seen sitting in the bathroom sink, staring at his owner and yelling at her, as if demanding that she turns the water on for him.
“Gave my cat water from the sink once and now he sits in the sink and yells at me until I turn the sink on,” the poster says in the clip. She then adds in the caption: “Mistake on my part.”
While Kirby seems fascinated by the thought of water, most cats are usually very afraid of it, and will go to extreme lengths to avoid getting wet.
According to Vet Help Direct, cats have every reason to hate water. First, it may be in their DNA. A theory is that because their ancestors lived in desert areas of Northern Africa, their lack of exposure to water has lead our little felines to fear it.
This aversion to water can also be justified by their love of a tidy coat, which water can easily dishevel. Another reason could be something in the water that your feline is seeing or smelling that makes it unappealing.
Whether your cat likes water or not, as their owner, it is your responsibility to ensure that they drink enough of it every day.
Signs that your cat isn’t drinking enough water include sunken eyes, dry mouth, constipation, panting, and loss of elasticity in their skin, according to the Maury County Veterinarian Hospital’s (MCVH) website.
To keep your cat hydrated, make sure that you provide fresh water daily, even if they still have water left in the bowl from the day before.
Trying a different bowl or a different location, as long as it’s far enough from their littler tray, can also help. And if your cat eats dry food, MCVH suggests switching to canned food instead.
