A curious cat has left the internet in stitches after sticking her head in a glass and getting her first taste of sparkling water.
The adorable beige tabby, Luna, leaned in for a sip, only to recoil once she realized her drink was fizzy. The video, posted to Instagram by her owner, has since garnered 74,345 likes and 1.8 million views.
“It’s the first time she drinks sparkle water…her lst glance at the glass,” wrote her owner, who goes by @lunastales_ on social media. “Her last glance at the glass,” they added in the caption.
In the clip, Luna enthusiastically sips from the glass, but her expression quickly changes as the bubbles hit her tongue. After a brief wince at the fizz, she promptly walks away, clearly unimpressed by the sparkling surprise.
So why do cats drink out of glasses in the first place? According to Catster, it’s often a matter of preference and curiosity. Cats may prefer drinking from your glass because it’s fresher, cooler, or simply because it’s different from their usual water bowl. Some experts also believe cats are instinctively drawn to moving water or water in elevated positions, as it may seem cleaner or safer.
When it comes to the difference between still and sparkling water, SodaSense explains that the key lies in carbonation. Sparkling water contains dissolved carbon dioxide, which creates bubbles and gives it a tangy, effervescent feel—an unfamiliar and potentially unpleasant sensation for pets like Luna who are used to still water.
But can cats drink sparkling water safely? According to Catster, sparkling water is not harmful to cats but too much could cause bloating or discomfort. They can only drink water without added sugars, flavors or colors.
Instagram users flooded the comments section with reactions to Luna’s dramatic taste test.
“Why’s it spicy!,” shared one user.
