Woman Finds Locked Door Inside 200-Year-Old Home, Shock at What It Leads To

Internet users have been left in shock by what a woman found hidden behind a locked door inside her home.

After relocating to Montpellier, France two years ago, Victoria Vale moved into an archaic home that she estimates to be around 200 years old. With it being so historic, it’s sure to have its surprises—but Vale was left stunned by a recent discovery she made earlier this month.

Vale, a DJ and producer, noticed a draft coming from behind a locked door under the stairwell that she’d never managed to open before. Prior to last week, she’d never really given it much thought, but after ripping the door open, she told Newsweek she felt “shocked, scared, but also curious.”

The door opened up to a stone staircase leading to a network of underground tunnels and rooms.

“There was a locked door that I’d never opened, and I assumed it was storage,” Vale, originally from Canada, said. “I felt a draft coming from it, and it seemed like it hadn’t been opened in a very long time.

“I have no idea what they were used for, but it could be anything from an older boiler room, storage, a bomb shelter, or a coal room. The possibilities are endless,” she continued.

Until recently, Vale had no idea what was underneath her home, but now she’s uncovered a whole new space to explore.

She believes that “most houses in the area may have something similar,” whether they’re aware of the tunnels or not.

After locating the tunnels and underground rooms, there was only one thing Vale contemplated doing down there: filming a DJ set for her YouTube channel (@VictoriaValeDJ). She loved the “dark vibes and forgotten energy,” and thought it would make a special backdrop for a new video.

“I’m unsure if it’s safe down there, so for now that one music video will be the only time I go down there until I can verify if it’s structurally safe, and also not filled with toxic substances like asbestos. But the video turned out great, so I consider that a win,” Vale told Newsweek.

While she is yet to find out how structurally sound the tunnels are, Vale joked that her kitchen floor hasn’t caved in, so it must be somewhat safe. One good thing that’s come of this new discovery however is that Vale feels as though her “house just got bigger.”

She received an overwhelming number of responses asking her about the hidden tunnels and how she found it. As a result, Vale shared a post on Reddit (posting as user u/Visible_Sale4845) with several pictures of the underground space she uncovered.

Alongside the post, she explained that some of the rooms and tunnels appear to have power and others have flowing water. Perhaps most unnerving was the discovery of “many stained blankets,” which she suggests could be blood.

The post has gone viral with over 10 million views and 18,000 votes on Reddit since it was shared on April 13. The online reaction is beyond anything Vale expected, and she’s been completely blown away by the countless responses.

“The reaction has been mostly positive, and a lot of people are flocking to the video to check it or show support to my music. Many people were also referencing the horror movie ‘Barbarian’ as supposedly the basement resembles it almost identically, which is a little wild.”

Social media users were left stunned by Vale’s underground discovery, leading to more than 1,500 comments on the viral Reddit post so far.

One comment reads: “Instantly thought of Barbarian when I saw this post.”

Another Reddit user wrote: “Think of the extra square footage!”

While another person added: “You should absolutely get that place cleaned out, sealed properly, and extend into it. Band space, movie theater, storage…”
