Comedian Calls ‘Modern Family’ Star a ‘Tyrant’

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

It looks like Sarah Hyland’s time on set of The Wedding Year wasn’t as charming as her onscreen persona –– at least according to one of her costars.

Comedian Jeff Dye recently made some eyebrow-raising claims about the actress’ behavior during filming, labeling her a “tyrant” and alleging she was “rude to everyone” on set.

Speaking on the Thursday, February 13 episode of The George Janko Show, Dye shared his experience working with Hyland, recalling that he was on set for only a brief period but had a few tense encounters with the Modern Family star.

The stand-up performer referred to Hyland as “a pretty woman who chain-smokes and is terrible,” and recounted an instance where she allegedly complained about extras helping themselves to food from the craft service table. “She was annoyed that some extras wanted some f**king free granola bars … like it was in her kitchen or something,” he said. Dye also claimed that she told him, “You’re what is wrong with people.”

Dye reflected on how the Love Island USA host seemed to act like “No. 1” on set, and that everyone was expected to do what she wanted. “They’re all in this hierarchy of Hollywood where it’s like, she’s No. 1 on the call sheet, [so] we have to, like, pander to her. If she’s mean to us, just let her be mean to us, and if she’s sad, pretend like it’s OK that she’s sad.”

Despite the difficult working environment, Dye claimed that it brought the rest of the staff together, bonding over their mutual dislike for Hyland. “I think, actually, people found camaraderie in hating her. Like, she was the island.” He also stated he isn’t afraid of any repercussions his comments may have, as he insists he is “just being honest.”

Hyland has not yet publicly addressed Dye’s claims.
