A dog’s nearly monthlong transformation to trust humans again after being surrendered proves patience is key.

One-year-old Roxy was surrendered to the New York nonprofit Four Legs Good at the end of November. She had “many unpleasant experiences” with humans before being dropped off, which made her “terrified” of anyone who would try to befriend her.

However, Rachel Oldenburger, a foster parent and shelter volunteer, took a chance on Roxy to show her how it feels to be loved. Oldenburger shared in a January 5 Instagram video (@rachels.dogs) that helping Roxy get to the point of trusting humans again didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it took a few weeks for the terrier mix to trust humans again.

Petrified and shaking, Roxy would stand with her tail between her legs. She wouldn’t even look at Oldenburger when they went outside, which signaled to Oldenburger that she needed to start slow and steady.

The process began with Oldenburger taking Roxy on silent walks around the shelter. All she could do was be there for the dog. Then, through consistent, daily work, Roxy slowly let her guard down. She started to relax after realizing she wouldn’t be hurt.

As the days continued, Roxy began accepting doggy treats and pets and showed off her sitting skills. Roxy finally requested attention from Oldenburger for the first time on day 19.

“It was a huge moment,” Oldenburger wrote in the caption.

Other shelter volunteers jumped in to continue working with Roxy. Christina, in particular, came in several days a week and helped Roxy feel comfortable. Their relationship “FLOURISHED.”

The end of the clip shows Roxy finally enjoying her walks, which she’s successfully done with other dogs. On day 35, viewers could see Roxy fully embracing her personality as she rolled over to get belly rubs.

Part of the caption explains that Roxy is still “timid.” It will take her time to warm up to new people. However, Oldenburger and the other volunteers’ patience paid off. Roxy is now trusting, confident and ready to find her forever home.
