Roki Sasaki is the top priority for the San Diego Padres to help fill their rotation.
However, there are several teams reportedly in on Sasaki, so the Padres need to have a backup plan. Even if they do sign Sasaki, they could grab another starting pitcher to finalize the rotation.
Whether or not the Japanese phenom lands in San Diego, all of the Padres’ starting pitchers are currently right-handed. Signing José Quintana as the lefty option could make a lot of sense for the Padres.

Even at 35 years old last season, Quintana showed he can still be a workhorse in a rotation. He made 31 starts for the Mets and recorded a 3.75 ERA over 170 1/3 innings.
Baseball Savant shows one of Quintana’s best attributes is his ground ball rate. He was in the 79th percentile of forcing hitters into ground balls that helped keep his ERA down.
Quintana has bounced around the league over the course of his career, but he has done quite well against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Through 13 appearances, Quintana posted 52 strikeouts and a 2.04 ERA.
He is currently projected to sign a two-year deal worth just over $16 million. The deal produces an average annual value of $8.3 million, a number the Padres could easily pay.
General manager A.J. Preller is always looking for ways to improve his team and keep up with the Dodgers in the National League West. Signing Quintana wouldn’t be a move that creates a lot of head turns in the beginning. However, strong performances from him could help to create a rotation that go toe-to-toe with any team.
