Last year, Texas <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/texas-ten-commandments-law-public-schools-scotus-43e679cf473e6b98b091d575578824eb\">became the largest state<\/a> to require every classroom to display the Ten Commandments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The proposal has drawn fierce opposition. Critics argue the changes violate the constitutional separation of church and state, inflate the role of Christianity in the nation\u2019s history and favor it over other religions. Supporters say Judeo-Christian traditions were fundamental to the nation\u2019s founding and that should be reflected in the public school curriculum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Here&#8217;s what to know about the proposal and the broader fight over religion in public schools in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">President Donald Trump has pledged to protect and expand religious expression in public schools nationwide, and Texas \u2014 a red state that is home to about one in 10 of all U.S. public school students \u2014 often sets the agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In 2023, Texas became <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/texas-public-schools-chaplains-religion-451f9149e85688dd1230e9cdd6c269b0\">the first state<\/a> to allow the hiring of chaplains to counsel students, and the following year, the board narrowly approved an <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/texas-bible-religion-schools-52b74577982b34ce2607b693bd51cae7\">optional Bible-infused curriculum<\/a> for elementary schools. Last year, Republican lawmakers required public schools to display the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/texas-ten-commandments-law-public-schools-scotus-43e679cf473e6b98b091d575578824eb\">Ten Commandments<\/a>, a measure recently upheld by a federal appeals court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Texas has about 5.5 million public school students from kindergarten through high school. If approved by the board, the required reading list would take effect in 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cWe need to focus on what our nation was founded on and not apologize for that,\u201d Susan Perez, founder of the Citizens for Education Reform, told the education board during testimony over the proposal. \u201cIt is the truth and we should not be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Picture-book stories for elementary students including \u201cNoah\u2019s Ark,\u201d \u201cDavid and Goliath\u201d and \u201cDaniel and the Lion\u2019s Den\u201d are on the required reading list. By fourth grade, students would encounter passages about Jesus in the New Testament. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">By middle school, students would be expected to read several passages about Jesus, including passages from his most famous sermon, and another where he instructs people to cast aside earthly anxiety and seek the kingdom of God. Another would connect a reading from the Book of Lamentations and its themes of the destruction of Jerusalem with readings about the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In high school, students would read the parable of the prodigal son, portions of the Book of Job, and the story of Adam and Eve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Some education observers said Texas may be the first state to enact a required reading list, with the added layer of mandated religious text.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Antero Garcia, president of the National Council of Teachers of English and a Stanford University professor, said he doesn\u2019t know of any other state that has such a list.
