Map Shows Kroger Stores Closing Nationwide

Kroger will move forward with the shut down of around 60 stores nationwide over the next 18 months.

The supermarket chain, which began the year operating at more than 2,700 locations, said the closures were part of an effort to focus on profitability and to reinvest savings into improving customer experiences.

The company disclosed the decision on June 20, noting the closures represent about 2 percent of its total footprint.

Although Kroger declined to release a full list of shuttered stores, local media and labor union announcements have identified dozens of locations that will soon close.

Why It Matters

This decision follows significant internal changes at the company, including the resignation of former CEO Rodney McMullen in March amid an ethics investigation. Interim CEO Ron Sargent now leads the company, which has also experienced recent rounds of layoffs targeting non-store personnel.

The closure of 60 stores is a signal of change within one of America’s largest grocers. The move affects workers, communities, and potentially local economies, especially in areas where a Kroger location represents a key food provider. Though the company has pledged to offer roles in nearby stores to displaced workers, the shutdowns could contribute to growing concerns about food deserts in less-served regions.

What To Know

While Kroger has not published the full list of the closures, several confirmed store shutdowns have surfaced through local news and union announcements.

As shown in Newsweek’s map, reported closures affect a number of states, including Georgia, Texas and Louisiana.

The closures include Mariano’s and Pick’n Save outlets, which are operated by Roundy’s Supermarkets, a subsidiary of Kroger. Some Harris Teeter stores are closing too, Harris Teeter also being a subsidiary of Kroger.

What People Are Saying

A spokesperson for Kroger told USA TODAY that it “will not be releasing the store list at this time.”

Newsweek contacted Kroger for more information on the closures via email.

What’s Next

Financially, Kroger expects to see modest savings from the closures, with plans to redirect the capital toward store renovations and expansions. The company said it would spend up to $3.8 billion in 2025 on capital expenditures, even as it trims underperforming assets.
