Yankees ‘Aggressively’ Targeting 2 Key Positions in Trade

Major League Baseball’s trade deadline may not be for another two months, but it’s never too early to make an upgrade.

That appears to be the New York Yankees’ thinking, as according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Bronx Bombers are “aggressively” targeting two key positional upgrades.

“The Yankees are aggressively searching for a right-handed bat, preferably a third baseman, while also looking for another starter,” Nightengale wrote in his latest article.

Starting pitching has been an obvious need for the Yankees ever since Gerrit Cole underwent Tommy John surgery in March, ending his 2025 season before it began.

The saving grace for the Yankees has been their offseason splurge, as Max Fried — who signed an eight-year, $218 million deal this winter — has arguably been the best pitcher in baseball through the first two months of the season.

No one has made more starts than Fried’s 11, and he leads all of baseball with a minuscule 1.29 ERA. He’s also an incredible 7-0 with a 0.93 WHIP and .191 batting average against.

While Fried is getting paid to be an ace, Carlos Rodon has been the major surprise in New York’s rotation, as he currently leads MLB with a .161 batting average against. He’s 6-3 with a 2.88 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 65.2 innings.

Unfortunately for New York, the rotation has struggled mightily behind their two aces. No other full-time starter has an ERA below 4.00. Luis Gil will be a much-needed addition to the rotation, but he’s not set to return for another couple months.

As for third base, the Yankees have been one of the worst teams in MLB in terms of production from the hot corner.

Entering Monday, Yankees third baseman have a combined OPS of .545, which ranks 29th in MLB. The Yankees have just two home runs from the third base position, as Oswald Peraza, Oswaldo Cabrera and Jorbit Vivas have all struggled.

The most obvious right-handed third base trade candidate is Nolan Arenado, who the St. Louis Cardinals have tried to ship off since the beginning of the offseason.

Even though the Cardinals are a surprising 30-23, they would likely be more than willing to move off of Arenado, who has another three years and $74 million left on his deal.
