The Boston Red Sox made multiple moves this offseason to put their team in the position to win. Adding players such as Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman has proven to be a huge step in the right direction for a Red Sox team that needed a boost.
But Boston still needs to add to its roster this season. The Red Sox have holes in the rotation and bullpen, mainly, but there are a few other places they could look to upgrade.
For the Red Sox to chase down the New York Yankees and win the American League East, they’re going to need to swing a few blockbuster trades this year. Here are a few ideas that could push them in the right direction.

Trade proposal 1: Red Sox land former Cy Young winner
- Red Sox acquire: RHP Sandy Alcántara
- Marlins acquire: UTL Ceddanne Rafaela, SS/2B Franklin Arias, RHP David Sandlin, SS/2B Mikey Romero
If the Red Sox are serious about wanting to make a move in the right direction, a trade for Sandy Alcántara is the place to start. Of all the pitchers who are likely to become available in a trade this year, Alcántara is the best, and he’s under team control for a few more seasons.
It would be a costly trade for the Red Sox to make, but they can afford to make it. Boston has top prospect Roman Anthony banging on the door of the big leagues. Moving Rafaela clears room for Anthony to stick in the lineup. Boston has plenty of pitching in the farm system that will be ready before David Sandlin. It also has a plethora of talented young infielders ahead of Franklin Arias and Mikey Romero.
Trade proposal 2: Red Sox bring in two star pitchers
- Red Sox acquire: RHP Nick Martinez, RHP Alexis Diaz
- Reds acquire: UTL Ceddanne Rafaela, OF Yophery Rodriguez, RHP Luis Guerrero
The Red Sox need to bring in a starting pitcher and a reliever or two. They could kill two birds with one stone in a deal with the Cincinnati Reds.
Nick Martinez is on an expiring deal, so he won’t break the bank to acquire. The righty is very consistent and does a good job of keeping the ball in the park. He’s not as talented as Alcántara, but he’s much cheaper.
Alexis Diaz hasn’t pitched in the big leagues this year. He’s looked a bit concerning during his minor league rehab stint, but the righty is a lockdown reliever when everything is clicking. Boston would need to see him return to form in order to make this trade worthwhile.
Trade proposal 3: Red Sox acquire superstar closer
- Red Sox acquire: RHP Ryan Helsley
- Cardinals acquire: SS/2B Franklin Arias, OF Jhostynxon Garcia
The biggest hole on Boston’s roster is the closer role. Aroldis Chapman and a few other pitchers have filled in the role, but Boston doesn’t have a shutdown guy to confidently go to in the ninth inning of a one-run game.
The best closer expected to be available in a trade is St. Louis Cardinals flame-thrower Ryan Helsley.
Helsley is among the best relievers in the game, but he’s on an expiring contract. The Red Sox could part ways with a few top prospects who are blocked by even better young talent in order to land the star righty.
