Motor City Madness: New Tiger Gleyber Torres Directs Snarky Tweet at Yankees GM

A $15 million, one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers is apparently not enough to cool the irritation second baseman Gleyber Torres feels toward his previous team, the New York Yankees — annoyance which he expressed Friday on social media.

Torres was signed out of Caracas, Venezuela, by the Chicago Cubs at the age of 16 in 2013, but three years later the Cubs included him in a trade package for Yankees flame throwing reliever Aroldis Chapman. Until signing with the Tigers, Torres was a Yankee ever since.

Torres arrived in the big leagues in 2018 when he was selected as an American League All-Star and placed third in Rookie of the Year voting. But after 2024, the Yankees let him go to free agency without making any offer to keep him in the Bronx. The reasons why were not made entirely clear. But perhaps now they have been.

Torres has been a Tiger since a couple of days after Christmas when he agreed to his new contract, but he appears to be keeping a close eye on his old team. When Yankees longtime general manager Brian Cashman gave an interview this week in which he appeared to say that Torres refused to shift positions to third base, and that’s why he was not re-signed, the 28-year-old former Yankee shot back — on his social media account.

“I acquired (Jazz) Chisholm to play second base,” Cashman said in the interview. “But that plan changed because of Torres’ preference, which put it in Aaron Boone’s hands.”

Now the Yankees are left with no genuine third baseman or second baseman, though it appears they plan to use Chisholm at second. But Cashman’s implication irked Torres who clearly saw the quote and quickly posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“Still ? 😴😂 just turn 🗒️,” Torres posted. In other words, Torres was telling Cashman to “turn the page,” while also expressing his supposed boredom and, judging by the laughing emoji, amusement with the controversy.

“I don’t blame Torres for clapping back. He’s been an easy target in recent years, often catching heat while other Yankees have skated by without public accountability,” wrote Bleeding Yankee Blue managing editor Robert Casey. “But the bottom line is this: championship-caliber teams need guys who put the squad first, no matter where they’re asked to play. And if the Yankees saw third base as Gleyber’s best fit at the time, he should’ve taken the challenge head-on.”

Cashman has not acknowledged the tweet from Torres, and the former Yankees infielder has since deleted the post from his account.
