Sony has released an official first look at Until Dawn, its latest film based on its video games. The upcoming horror film is being directed by David F. Sandberg (Shazam!), and it will feature an original story with a new cast set in the game’s universe.
The first look video gives us a sneak peek at footage from the film, but it will be followed by an official trailer soon. Sandberg says that the film has a similar tone and vibe as the game, but it “expands upon the universe” of the original.

A core aspect of the original game is its branching narrative, where players can make different choices to alter the characters’ fates. Fans have wondered how a film adaptation would tackle that, and the answer seems to be simple: time loops.
“The movie has this mechanic where things start over and they get to try again,” said Sandberg. “Every time they come back to life, it’s like they’re in a new horror genre. To survive, they have to make it until dawn.”
Besides the main protagonists, we also get to see Peter Stormare reprise his role as Dr. Hill from the game. “The movie’s going to be full of fresh characters and victims in a brand new story loaded with twists,” said Stormare at Sony’s CES 2025 conference earlier this month.
Sony has also released the first official synopsis for Until Dawn, which you can read below.
One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again – only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.
Until Dawn will be released in theaters worldwide in April 2025.
