James Gunn Calls Out Zack Snyder Fans Threatening ‘Superman’

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

“Superman” remains one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year.

Not only is it bringing the Man of Steel back to the big screen, it also marks the beginning of a new DC Universe led by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.

However, not everyone is happy with the change, particularly of the Zack Snyder-led “Snyderverse” group of films.

While a majority of these movies weren’t well-received commercially, their is still an incredibly vocal fanbase that considers the likes of “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Justice League” some of the best superhero movies ever made.

Now, a vocal minority of those fans have spoken out, threatening to tank and review bomb the highly anticipated film.

“Stand up and fight for SnyderVerse on July 11,” a Reddit user said, per Zack Sharf of Variety. “Fight for our SnyderVerse on the imposter ‘Superman’ release day.”

The Reddit user then left detailed plans to review bomb and reserve tickets so that “Gunn-bots” won’t be able to leave “fake positive reviews” or buy tickets.

“Gunn fired the first shot and killed the SnyderVerse, and here is our chance to take the fight back to him,” the user concluded.

Needless to say, this has gotten the attention of DCU fans around the world, and now Gunn himself has spoken out.

Gunn shared an image of the original Reddit post on r/SnyderCut, which has since been removed by moderators, and seemed to completely laugh it off.

“I think we will survive,” Gunn said. “I’m not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it’s a guy) are going to impact the course of events.”

Gunn gave further detail in his recent interview with Brian Hiatt of Rolling Stone, noting that he doesn’t mind this kind of negativity.

“I don’t mind it. I think it’s good,” Gunn said. “I think you don’t wanna have everybody root for you, And I have an actor who reads everything online. I won’t say who it is, but he’ll read this article, and he’ll know who it is. It’s one of the top five in Superman.

“And this actor gets so upset over things that people say. I said, ‘First of all, you realize that the trailer came out and [reaction] was 97, 98% positive. These people help us, because you don’t want everything to seem 100% positive.'”

“It’s all right to have an opposing force every once in a while,” Gunn concluded. “Some of the things get ridiculous — I just know that every time something comes out, it doesn’t matter how positively received, there’s gonna be something that is of great controversy. It was great controversy that the sun caused Superman pain.”

In the end, it seems that this kind of tribalism isn’t helpful for anyone, especially since Gunn even got advice from Snyder when it came to Superman’s suit.

“One of the biggest questions was, ‘Were we gonna have trunks, or were we gonna not have trunks?'” Gunn said in an interview with Fandango.

“I talked to Zack Snyder, who was like, ‘I tried a billion different versions with the trunks, and at the end of the day, I tried it, but I just couldn’t get there.’ And I was feeling exactly the same way. … Theoretically, I liked the idea of trunks because it’s the Superman I grew up with.”
