A dog has gone viral for showing the only place he wants to go on a walk: into the bar.

Jessica, 23, is from New Jersey, and is the proud owner of rescue dog Toby, who she told Newsweek came from Puerto Rico and “can be anxious around strangers.”

“Through training, bringing him to dog-friendly areas was a way to socialize him,” she explained—and over time, his favorite spot became the bar.

“He thrives when we find a corner seat and it’s not crowded,” Jessica, who works in marketing, said. “He’s an introvert—loves to watch the people socialize around him but doesn’t necessarily want to be involved or touched, unless you have treats!”

Now a clip of Toby making a huge effort to drag his owner to the bar has gone viral, since being posted to Jessica’s TikTok account @toby.the.bean on May 30.

In the video, Jessica, who gave her first name only, walks down the street with Toby, but all of a sudden the pup stops dead in his tracks. He then pulls on the lead, trying to walk through a barrier leading to the outdoor area of a bar.

Even as his owner tries to pull him away, Toby keeps turning back, staring at the customers sitting outside with their drinks, and clearly wants to be stuck in the middle of it.

At one point, Toby even jumps up on his hind legs and places his paws on the barrier to get a better look—and then completely stops, refusing to move as Jessica tries to continue their walk.

She wrote over the video sarcastically: “Leave [your] dog at home, he doesn’t like the bar,” before showcasing “my dog when we walk past his bar without going in.”

“He has to be dragged away from the bar like a drunk girl at 2 am,” she joked in the caption.

TikTok users loved the clip, which has been viewed more than 1.4 million times and racked up more than 350,000 likes, with one commenter joking: “Have I already been reincarnated?”

Another wrote Toby was telling his owner: “Literally everyone is here, we have to go in,” as one declared: “God forbid pup wants a marg and a vibe.”

And another shared: “My dog also loves the bar, pub, coffee shop…he’s a social butterfly.”

Some bars and restaurants are dog-friendly, allowing customers’ four-legged friends to attend with them for meals or drinks. But owners should always check beforehand that their dog will be allowed into the venue with them, and there are also certain etiquette tips that they should be aware of.

Be considerate to other customers: find a quiet spot, keep your dog leashed and don’t allow them to beg, keep them off the furniture, and don’t allow them to bark repetitively, a vet-reviewed report from Wag! advises. Dogs should be trained in essential commands such as sit and stay, and it’s a good idea to feed them first and have toys available as a distraction and to prevent boredom.

In Toby’s case, Jessica said Toby “gets unlimited amounts of treats while in the bar, and loves showing off his tricks.”

“With the unlimited amounts of golden retriever TikTok pages, I’m happy my rescue dog got a moment to shine on everyone’s FYP [For You Page],” she added.
