Full List of Seats Mark Carney’s Liberals Flipped in Canada Election Win

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney‘s Liberal Party won Canada’s federal election on Monday night, following a campaign heavily influenced by pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Newsweek contacted Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who lost his own seat in the election, via email on Tuesday.

Why It Matters

The election results are a major upset as the Conservatives were widely expected to win amid growing unpopularity of the Liberals and Carney having taken the leadership position only six weeks before the election.

Following Trump’s tariff threats and comments about turning Canada into the 51st state, Carney took a strong stance against pressure from the U.S. president, positioning himself as the defender of Canada’s independence.

List of Seats Flipped by the Liberal Party

With 312 of 343 seats called at the time of writing, the Liberal Party has won 154 seats, flipping 28 from other parties, including 11 from the Conservatives, according to The New York Times.

Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy also secured a victory in Carleton, the seat previously held by Poilievre.

The Conservatives have secured 131 seats and flipped 29, including 17 from the Liberals.

Both major parties made gains in this election, with smaller parties losing support.

The Liberal Party has flipped the following seats previously held by the Conservative Party:

  • Carleton
  • Calgary Confederation
  • Edmonton Centre
  • Kelowna
  • South Surrey–White Rock
  • Winnipeg West
  • Cumberland–Colchester
  • South Shore–St. Margarets
  • Bay of Quinte
  • Peterborough
  • Sault Ste. Marie–Algoma

The Liberal Party also flipped the following seats previously held by other parties:

  • Burnaby Central
  • Esquimalt–Saanich–Sooke
  • New Westminster–Burnaby–Maillardville
  • Port Moody–Coquitlam
  • Victoria
  • Churchill–Keewatinook Aski
  • Hamilton Centre
  • Abitibi–Baie-James–Nunavik–Eeyou
  • Beauport–Limoilou
  • Châteauguay–Les Jardins-de-Napierville
  • La Prairie–Atateken
  • Les Pays-d’en-Haut
  • Longueuil–Saint-Hubert
  • Mont-Saint-Bruno–L’Acadie
  • Rivière-des-Mille-Îles
  • Thérèse-De Blainville
  • Trois-Rivières

Five new ridings, or constituencies, were introduced in this election, and The New York Times also estimated which parties would have won these in 2021 for the above list.

What People Are Saying

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in his victory speech: “America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. But these are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, that will never ever happen.”

Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party, said in his concession speech: “To my fellow Conservatives, we have much to celebrate tonight. We’ve gained well over 20 seats. We got the highest share of vote our party has received since 1988. We denied the NDP and Liberals enough seats to form a coalition government.”

What Happens Next

As the final few seats are declared, it will become clear whether the Liberal Party has secured a majority of seats. If the Liberals don’t, they will likely need to form a coalition government with other parties to maintain control. They could also rule as a minority government.
