Could 100 Men Really Take on One Gorilla and Win? We Asked ChatGPT

In a battle between logic and hubris, 100 men and one gorilla entered the fray over the weekend, after one social media user’s post suggesting the men—if organized effectively—would emerge victorious in such a matchup, went viral.

The user @DreamChasnMike wrote in a X post on April 25: “i think 100 n***** could beat 1 gorilla everybody just gotta be dedicated to the s***.”

The post has so far accumulated more than 200 million views and sparked fierce debate. Some joked about how they’d react if they were part of the hypothetical endeavor, while others said that they thought the men would stand little chance against the gorilla.

One user wrote: “me and the homies going to fight the gorilla but wearing suits to make the funerals easier.”

To settle the argument, Newsweek asked ChatGPT if it thought 100 men had a chance in such a fight. Here’s what the generative artificial intelligence tool said.

Could 100 Men Defeat a Male Gorilla in a Fight?

1. Understanding the Gorilla’s Strength

Physical Power:

An adult male silverback gorilla weighs between 300 and 500 pounds (136–227 kg) and is incredibly strong. Estimates suggest a gorilla is between 4 to 9 times stronger than a trained human male. Their upper body strength is immense — they can tear down small trees or bend iron bars in captivity.

Natural Weapons:

  • Bite force: around 1,300 PSI (pounds per square inch), far greater than a lion’s bite (650 PSI).
  • Arm reach: much longer than humans, allowing powerful swipes.
  • Speed and Agility: A gorilla can sprint short distances at around 20–25 mph and can climb with extreme efficiency.

Durability:
Gorillas have thick skin and dense muscles, making them extremely hard to injure without weapons. They are used to intense physical confrontations with other gorillas.

2. The Men: Assumptions and Coordination

Who Are the “100 Men”?

  • If they are untrained civilians, most would be physically weaker and would lack the knowledge to coordinate an effective assault.
  • If they are trained fighters or soldiers, their ability to strategize and work together greatly improves.

Natural Human Limitations:

  • Fear: Gorillas are terrifying; humans would likely be terrified.
  • Size and strength: Even a strong human is no match for a gorilla in 1-on-1 combat.
  • Coordination: 100 uncoordinated people can become more of a chaotic crowd than a disciplined force.

3. Tactical Considerations

Environment:
If the fight happens in a wide-open field, the men could surround the gorilla. In a forested or cramped environment, the gorilla’s mobility advantage would increase.

Strategy:

  • Swarm attack: If all 100 men attack simultaneously, they could overwhelm the gorilla simply by mass.
  • Sacrifice: Realistically, the first few men would almost certainly be killed or severely injured. The gorilla could easily maim several men before being exhausted.
  • Mobility limitation: Some men could work to immobilize the gorilla’s limbs while others tackle it from behind or atop.

Numbers:

  • 100 is a massive number in a tight circle. Even if a gorilla could incapacitate 10–20 quickly, 80+ would remain.
  • Crushing weight matters: if 50 men physically pile onto the gorilla, even it would struggle to move under the mass.

4. Potential Outcomes

Gorilla Wins Scenario:

  • If the 100 men panic, scatter, or fail to coordinate, the gorilla could pick them off in smaller groups.
  • If fear dominates, the men would break rank.
  • A gorilla could kill multiple people with a few swipes or bites.

Humans Win Scenario:

  • If the men surround and attack simultaneously, sacrificing some individuals, they could restrain the gorilla.
  • Given enough people grabbing its arms, legs, and head, eventually the gorilla would tire.
  • Once immobilized, the gorilla could be beaten (though it would still resist ferociously until its last breath).

5. Ethical and Real-World Reflection

Reality Check:
This scenario is entirely hypothetical. In reality, it would be horrifically unethical to harm a gorilla — they are critically endangered and protected under international law. Gorillas are not aggressive toward humans unless severely provoked. Also, orchestrating such an event would be an act of animal cruelty and a major legal violation.

Historical Context:
In ancient times, gladiatorial contests with wild animals were common, but they were heavily one-sided and involved weapons. This underscores how dangerous wild animals are to unarmed humans.

Final Verdict

Yes, 100 unarmed men could defeat a single adult male gorilla, but:

  • It would come at extreme cost (likely dozens of deaths or catastrophic injuries).
  • It would require incredible coordination, courage, and strategic sacrifice.
  • Without careful planning, the gorilla could very well win or cause immense devastation before being overcome.

Summary Line:

“Victory is possible only through overwhelming numbers, sheer courage, and sacrifice.”

Newsweek does not advise nor endorse the idea that any number of people seek to fight a gorilla, or any animal, for that matter.
