The final autopsy for Gene Hackman has been released by the Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico, confirming that signs point to heart failure as the likely cause of death.

The report said that Hackman had a “history of congestive heart failure” and “severe chronic hypertensive changes” to his kidneys, according to Fox News. The report also found “neurodegenerative features consistent Alzheimer’s Disease” and trace amounts of acetone, which is “a product of diabetic- and fasting-induced ketoacidosis.”

Hackman, 95, was found dead in his home along with his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, on February 26, but were believed to have been dead for some time prior to the discovery.

Preliminary investigations determined that Arakawa had died of the Hantavirus, an illness passed through infected rat feces. Hackman survived for a week longer before passing but was unable to take care of himself due to his Alzheimer’s.

The report confirmed that Hackman tested negative for Hantavirus, the illness that killed his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and that saturation for carbon monoxide was at five percent, which is “keeping with a normal range.”
