The bond between humans and animals, especially in times of grief, is melting viewers’ hearts across TikTok, thanks to a clip of a grandmother and her rescued French bulldog.

In a TikTok video posted on the account @jackmichaelmcardle by her grandson, Jack McArdle, the woman and her dog are seen to have become truly inseparable companions after the death of her husband. McArdle, 26, told Newsweek about the clip and the incredible bond that inspired it.

His video shows his grandmother and her dog, Gucci, through their daily moments together—gentle walks with the pup trotting along in a pink sweater; cuddles on the couch; and play.

McArdle told Newsweek that Gucci’s rescue wasn’t from a typical shelter situation.

“My grandma rescued Gucci, not from a shelter or anything, but from a family member who got overwhelmed with taking in dogs,” he said.

The pup’s previous environment was difficult: “Poor Gucci would be subject to being attacked daily by some of the bigger dogs; although she’s so timid and loving, she was shut away from the other dogs, resulting in it not being fair for her,” McArdle said.

The timing was serendipitous. Gucci’s situation coincided with a period of unimaginable grief for McArdle’s grandmother. She had just lost her husband, and then, only a few months later, her dog of 16 years died, too.

“[She] thought she’d fill the void in her heart and take on Gucci, who is 5 years old,” McArdle said, “a lot younger than my grandma.”

Their meeting was such a “match made in heaven,” McArdle said. “They had both been seeking the love, and they had found it in one another.”

Viewers of the video were deeply moved by the story and the bond between the pair. The comments section overflowed with responses and sentiments about the healing power of pets in grief. “Your granddad [definitely] sent Gucci,” one person wrote.

“I’m a Frenchie Mum also, and this had brought a tear to my eye,” another posted. “They were meant for each other. Just hope your Nan copes with the Frenchie zoomies okay.”

Another French bulldog owner observed the dog’s seemingly intuitive behavior: “Having two Frenchies myself, I love how Gucci is so calm and gentle because she knows she needs to be for your grandma.”

The grandmother’s gentle nature with Gucci also earned praise. “I would trust this woman with my dogs and I don’t say that about many,” one commenter wrote. “What an angel.”

The video shows that perhaps the best way to heal a void is to fill it with unconditional love—most effectively, maybe, from a loving French bulldog.
