Internet users have been left in awe at a cat’s response to spotting a bug in the house, and the extreme lengths he went to on order to catch it.
Archie the cat’s hunting instincts were in full display in a viral video shared by his owner, Ruby Holland, on her account @rubyholland1 on February 20.
In a clip seen over 5 million times, and which has racked up 1.3 million likes in just over a day, Holland uses a camera to record a cicada she has found in her home.
As she kicks a foot out at it, it takes off into the air—and suddenly a ginger-and-white cat takes off after it.
Holland shrieks with laughter as Archie chases the bug with everything he’s got, leaping down the corridor and jumping to incredible heights.
At one point, Archie almost backflips—before proceeding to leap at one wall and ricochet himself further in the air, his claws out to catch the insect.
Archie doesn’t give up, and while at times the bug appears invisible to the naked eye, he continues tracking it with the incredible hunting instincts and skills inherent in cats, repeatedly jumping and swiping the air.
Finally, the bug lands on the floor beside Archie, and the fight is won.
And throughout the entire chaotic battle Holland is laughing, shouting and encouraging the cat to “get it, Archie!”
Cats’ hunting instincts come from a time before they were domesticated, and had to hunt for food to survive. However today’s domestic cats hunt more for entertainment, according to Purina.
A typical housecat can jump vertically between six and eight feet high, thanks to their long and strong hind legs.

TikTok users were in stitches at the video, with one commenter declaring Archie “is fighting for your life.”
“Now THAT is a cat earning his keep,” another said with a laughing emoji. Someone else agreed, saying “you’re in good paws,” while one person asked: “How does your cat jump so high?”
“How did she unlock double jump?,” another quipped, as a different person said “the dive off the wall was so calculated.”
