A woman who got the news her friend was expecting a baby didn’t, in fact, get the news.
Stacey, from the U.K., was having Christmas drinks at her friend Laura’s house when their friend Jess handed them cards with some news inside: She was pregnant.
“I didn’t see it coming, so I was so overwhelmed with emotion,” Stacey told Newsweek. “I think I cried on and off for ages afterward. We were just so shocked and so happy for her.”
According to Stacey, the three women are in their early 40s and have been friends for decades. Jess recorded the moment she handed her friends the cards, likely thinking she would capture a sweet moment she could save forever.
Instead, Stacey’s reaction gave them an entirely different type of memory, and it has gone viral on TikTok.
On February 16, under the username @staceysway1, Stacey posted the clip on the platform, where it has since received more than 3 million views.
“When your friend tries to tell you she’s pregnant but [you’re] half cut … and have no idea what’s happening,” she wrote in the caption, using a phrase that means tipsy.
In the card, Jess had written a note informing her that she’d been upgraded from best friend to auntie, but the message went over Stacey’s head.
“I assumed it was a Christmas card,” she told Newsweek. “I didn’t bother rushing to read it as I assumed it was just going to say ‘Happy Christmas,’ etc. I was just happy that it said ‘Best Friend.'”

In the video, Stacey and Laura open the cards at a table alongside glasses of prosecco. After Laura reads the card, her jaw drops, but Stacey opens hers only briefly before saying she’s “emotional now.”
Laura turns to Stacey and asks, “Did you know this already,” but Stacey appears confused.
She then asks Jess, “Are you pregnant?” While the woman behind the camera giggles, Stacey’s face drops. “What?!” she says before opening the card for a thorough read.
Laura asks her: “Have you not read the card, Stacey? What did you think the card said?”
“When Laura asked, ‘Did you already know?’ I grew even more confused, as I had no clue what was going on,” Stacey told Newsweek. “I didn’t even notice Jess filming; if I had, I might have figured it out a bit sooner.”
She added, “I also have ADHD, so that alongside a few proseccos, I had no hope of catching on.”
In the video’s caption, she wrote, “I don’t know how I make it from one day to the next.”
The video ends with both women realizing the gravity of what they’ve been told and clapping their hands to their faces.

In the United Kingdom, the average age of a first-time mother was 29 in 2020, according to the Office for National Statistics.
More than 1,000 TikTok users commented on the clip, with one writing, “Stacey was just happy she got a card,” while another said she was “looking for money in the card.”
Another laughed at Stacey saying she was “emotional now, but no idea why,” as one suggested she simply “took a quick glance at the card and was happy it said ‘best friend.'”
One viewer commented, “I don’t know you Stacey but don’t ever change!”
Stacey said she had watched the video multiple times, as “it’s so authentic and such a lovely video to keep forever.” Still, she was in “complete shock” with how popular it became on TikTok.
“The comments are so amazing; everyone loved it as much as we did,” she said.
“Things like this happen all the time, as my mind is normally somewhere else or racing with other thoughts,” she added. “I am definitely the one in the friendship group who gets the most laughs, normally at my expense.”
