Cat Who Likes Unusual Hiding Spaces Wins Pet of the Week

From a dog determined to join his owner in the bath to puppies enjoying their first ever car ride, we’ve seen lots of adorable and funny viral pet videos this week.

We’ve also been putting together our favorite pet videos and pictures from our readers for our weekly Newsweek Pet of the Week.

If you think your pet should be our Pet of the Week next week, follow the instructions at the end of this story to get involved.

Jeffrey Scudder

This week our winner is Specks, a cat who is known for liking unusual hiding spaces—his favorite spots are kitchen cupboards.

“Specks was discovered in the engine of a car on the highway. People in the car heard noises from the motor, pulled over and saw this tiny black and white fur buddy sitting inside,” owner Jeffrey Scudder told Newsweek.

Thankfully, she was rescued and placed safely in the passenger seat, where “she quietly sat, well behaved.”

Two weeks later, Scudder’s brother asked him, “Did I want a kitten?” Having already been considering one, he “immediately said yes.” Since then, Specks has become an irreplaceable part of his life.

“I couldn’t imagine being without her,” Scudder said.

Specks has a playful and affectionate nature—and is often found hanging out in strange hiding spaces.

“My best furry buddy Specks likes to check out cabinets and refrigerators. He gets into them and just sits there,” Scudder said.

Finalists

Mazylue
Australian Shepherd, Mazylue—affectionately called “Crazy Lue.”

Kimber Thivierge

Our first finalist this week is Australian Shepherd, Mazylue—affectionately called “Crazy Lue.”

Owner Kimber Thivierge told Newsweek: “As you can tell, she always has her tongue out. She sleeps like that mostly all the time.”

Thivierge who has had dogs her entire life, said: “She is the craziest dog I have ever owned.”

One of Mazylue’s most amusing habits is her propensity for stealing specific household items.

“She loves to ‘steal’ just my shoe, and just one, the spatula, and oven mitt,” Thivierge said.

She then runs outside and leaves her stolen treasures on the trampoline, where the family finds them hours later.

Henry
Adopted dog Henry is full of energy.

Jane DeWitt

Next this week is Jane DeWitt’s adopted dog Henry, who is about to turn five years old.

“He keeps this 70-year-old on her toes,” DeWitt told Newsweek, noting how energetic and playful her dog is. She said that Henry has a strong sense of entitlement, always thinking, “everyone who visits is here to see him.”

One of Henry’s most important tasks is alerting Jane when the mail arrives.

“His job is to let me know when the mail is here because he gets a treat.”

This routine not only keeps him engaged but also adds a bit of fun to Jane’s day, too.

Rocky

Debroah Delaney

Last but not least this week is Debroah Delaney’s beloved greyhound Reserved Power—affectionately known as Rocky—who she has remembered fondly following his death.

“He came from Orlando…We adopted him from a lady that brings 25 a year into Canada for adoption,” Delaney told Newsweek.

Though her family had always loved Shetland breeds, Rocky was a big change. Still, “he was the ultimate dog ever, and we have had some perfect dogs in our life.”

Rocky’s gentle and affectionate nature made him a joy to have.

“He was an absolute pleasure—loving, calm, attentive and always wanting to be with you wherever or whatever you were doing,” she said.

He especially loved the beach and walks, always staying close.

“He walked perfect on leash and wanted to lean on you always.”
