A farm owner from Yakima County, Washington, shared a video of two of his young sheepdogs training to become herding animals from a young age, and internet users can’t cope with the heart-warming footage.

The viral video, shared on TikTok in December under the username @satusstockdogs, shows the puppies familiarizing themselves with the livestock at the farm, enjoying some playtime as they learn how to do their future job.

The post quickly went viral on the platform, where it has so far received over 4.7 million views and 319,000 likes, and internet users can’t stop praising the hard-working puppies.

One user, Barske Farms, said: “Awww look at those little workers go!”

Briantology Reacts wrote: “That’s instinct right there.”

Mike McHenry added: “Border Collies are smarter than most of the people I know.”

Shepherd dogs are canines that belong to the herding group, which means they have evolved to become great working dogs thanks to hundreds of years of training.

The role of these pups is to protect and herd livestock, and ensure no animal gets lost while in their care. These dogs are so smart that some of them have found work in places like tracking, courier work, and sniffing.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), most herding dogs live as household pets, and never get to meet a farm animal; however, their instinct may prompt them to gently herd their owners, especially children.

There are multiple types of herding dogs, and each breed has different characteristics, but they all share the ability to control the movement of other animals.

The most popular shepherd dog breeds in the U.S. include Australian cattle dog, Australian shepherd, Border Collie, Belgian malinois, German shepherd, Icelandic sheepdog, and Pembroke Welsh corgi, among others.

The U.K.-based shepherd dog trainer, Mark Banham, states on his website, Banham Sheepdogs, that timing and approach to training are critical for success when it comes to training dogs.

He states that from eight weeks to four months old, these puppies begin forming foundational socialization skills. This time is also when they are introduced to basic commands like “Sit,” “Stay,” and “Come.”

From four to six months old they usually reinforce their recall and obedience training, which they will do until they are ready for more intensive training, typically from one year on.
