While many people bear a striking resemblance to their parents, two grandparents have stunned social media viewers by showing how genetic looks can skip a generation.

After seeing their family grow and becoming grandparents three times, Jeralyn and Michael Wirtz, both 73, have been amazed to see the uncanny likeness that their youngest grandchildren share with them. The twins, Polly and Henry, both 8, look just like their grandma and grandpa did when they were younger and even share many behavior traits.

“We’re amazed, especially when we see side-by-side photos,” Jeralyn told Newsweek. “It makes us emotional to see ourselves in our children and now our grandchildren too. They all make us so proud.”

While Henry has always resembled his grandpa, Jeralyn said Polly has only started to look like her as she’s gotten older and her “features started to mature.” Now, the twins are practically Mini-Me’s of their grandparents, who have been married for over 46 years.

The couple shared the likenesses in a video posted on Instagram (@jeri.andmike), showing that “genetics can skip a generation.” The video, featuring images of Jeralyn and Michael alongside their grandchildren, went viral, with over 510,000 views and 8,200 likes so far.

Indeed, Polly and Henry don’t just look like their grandparents but are very similar when it comes to their personalities.

Jeralyn said: “Polly and Henry are more like their grandma—very outgoing, bold and opinionated. But sometimes Polly can be very shy and reserved also, which favors her grandpa’s personality.

“We think our children share many of our features, but we wouldn’t say they look exactly like us. Our daughter Nicole looks more like Jeri, and our son Ryan is an equal mixture of us both,” she said.

As for their eldest grandchild, 15-year-old Aiden, Jeralyn thinks he looks more like his mom than his grandparents.

What makes the strength of the family genetics even more intriguing is that Michael’s dad was also a twin, just like Polly and Henry.

“It’s fascinating to see how those genes skipped a generation. It’s amazing to see,” Michael said.

The Online Response

While Jeralyn and Michael have noticed their grandchildren’s likenesses before, it was only after watching footage of themselves on a 1977 episode of The Newlywed Game that they saw just how strong the resemblance is.

As they watched, Jeralyn said, they “couldn’t help but notice” their mannerisms and facial features, which they can also see in Polly and Henry. But perhaps what caught Jeralyn’s eye the most was seeing how her smile back then looks just like Polly’s now. She said the images were “so striking next to each other.”

Since the similarities were shared on Instagram, the post has amassed over 140 comments in just days.

Jeralyn said: “I would say 99 percent of the comments agree with us, as so many people think the resemblance is uncanny. It’s fun to see everyone’s reaction and how it inspires them to look at their own family photos.”

Among the hundreds of Instagram comments, many users were blown away by how much the twins resemble their grandparents.

One comment reads: “So cute and fun. Both of you have a mini me. Grandparenting is a blessing.”

Another person wrote: “I love seeing how much people can look alike through the generations! Even neater when you can see combined traits and see both of yourselves in little ways!”

Another Instagram user added: “The comparison of Jeri and her granddaughter made me gasp.”
