A dog’s unexpected reaction to seeing his friend again after two years apart has captured the hearts of social media users.

In a clip shared on TikTok earlier in January by @sophy.mae, a Great Dane can’t hide his happiness at seeing his friend again after such a long time apart, hanging around her and wagging his tail—as if telling her how much they were missed.

“And I was thinking they weren’t going to remember me after not seeing me for two years,” read the layover text in the clip.

Dogs have a remarkable ability to remember places and people, and studies have found they can even remember the location of hidden treats for up to two months.

The same goes for their owners, or other people they love. Our fur-babies can remember us even after years of separation.

Dr. Jess Kirk says in a Vet Explains Pets article that while dogs rely on their senses to recognize familiar faces and scents, their memory of us is based on the love and trust we have built with them over time.

Older dogs, especially those experiencing some degree of cognitive decline, may have some trouble remembering their owners from time to time, but their bond is not impacted.

Dogs will always remember their favorite people one way or another, even if they’re not their owners. A dog’s favorite person is not necessarily the one taking care of them, it can be anyone giving them attention—from the walker to their grandpa.

How do you know you’re a dog’s favorite? If that’s the case, the pup will show signs like following you around, wagging their tail at you and keeping eye contact, which is otherwise uncommon in the canine world.

The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 201,600 views and 28,700 likes on TikTok.

Commenting on the dog’s size, one user, Evelyn, said: “Who’s horse is that?” And Waldemar1265 added: “is that a pony?”
