A tense family dispute escalated at a birthday dinner when a woman’s mother-in-law (MIL) attempted to take her baby from her arms without speaking to her.

The woman, posting under the username One-Pineapple6919, described on Reddit how tensions had been growing between her and her husband’s family of seven after she and her husband stopped financially supporting his mother.

‘Upset the whole house’

The couple, who married and had a child within a year and a half of their relationship, had been paying her bills to help her get on her feet. However, with their baby‘s arrival, they decided their finances needed to be focused on their child’s future.

The decision was not well received by the husband’s family.

“This upset the whole house and everybody started to tell us how they really felt—well, not even us, just me,” the original poster (OP) told Redditors this week.

She said that her in-laws accused her of “corrupting” her husband and taking him away from them, referring to him as their, “Leader and support.”

The situation reached a breaking point during her husband’s birthday dinner, where she said she was mostly ignored by his family. Toward the end of the evening, her MIL attempted to take her baby from her arms without acknowledging her.

“I just pushed her hands away and she starts yelling, ‘I can’t take my grandbaby?’ in the middle of the restaurant,” the OP wrote.

“Now they’re talking about how I ruined his birthday dinner and want to make everything about me, but I just want respect.”

One commenter supported the OP, writing, “Your MIL is disrespectful given the context of her past actions. You’re not wrong to want respect as a mother and as your husband’s partner.
