Chicken Recall Sparks Allergic Reaction Warning

More than 100,000 pounds of frozen chicken have been recalled due to undeclared allergens.

Custom Food Solutions, a manufacturer based in Louisville, Kentucky, issued a voluntary recall on January 22 for its frozen drunken chicken product, which was distributed to 11 Yats restaurants in Indiana.

The product may contain egg and sesame, which were not declared on the product labels, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

Newsweek has contacted Custom Food Solutions for comment.

What To Know

The product impacted by the recall are pouches of Yats Drunken Chicken, cooked chicken thigh meat in spicy tomato sauce with beer.

A total of 105,164 pounds of the product have been recalled. The chicken was produced between March 14, 2024 through January 15, 2025 and has a shelf-life of one year.

The chicken was distributed in 60-lb cases containing 12, 5-lb pouches. They have the lot codes; 4074, 4102, 4130, 4144, 4163, 4178, 4214, 4229, 4236, 4255, 4325, 4326, 4339, 4355, 5002 and 5015.

The FSIS discovered the problem during routine labeling reviews, when it found that the egg and sesame ingredients were not listed on the final labels.

It said that there have been “no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of this product,” but added that anyone concerned about illness should contact a healthcare provider.

So far in January, two other food items have been recalled by the FSIS due to undeclared allergens.

On January 8, the FSIS recalled chicken curry empanadas for being mislabeled and potentially containing apple cinnamon empanadas, which contained milk, an allergen not included on the label.

Meanwhile, on January 13, 400 pounds of sausage products from UP Products, LLC were recalled as they contained the allergen soy, which was not included on the product label.

Why It Matters

The nine major foods allergens identified by U.S. law are sesame, soybeans, fish, milk, eggs, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts and crustacean shellfish, according to the FDA. These allergens must be listed on product labels.

Sesame became the ninth major food allergen after the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act was passed in 2021.

Food allergies are the leading cause of anaphylaxis, which can be fatal.

Allergic reactions to food can also cause hives, flushed skin, vomiting and/or diarrhea, abdominal cramps, coughing or wheezing, dizziness, swelling of the throat and vocal cords, difficulty breathing, and a drop in blood pressure.

What People Are Saying

The FDA says on its website: “Food allergies and other types of food hypersensitivities affect millions of Americans and their families. Food allergies occur when the body’s immune system reacts to certain proteins in food. Food allergic reactions vary in severity from mild symptoms involving hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms, often called anaphylaxis, that may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock.”

It adds: “While promising prevention and therapeutic strategies are being developed, food allergies currently cannot be cured. Early recognition and learning how to manage food allergies, including which foods to avoid, are important measures to prevent serious health consequences.”

What Happens Next

The recall is ongoing. Restaurants that may be in possession of the product have been urged not to serve it to customers.

The FSIS says the product should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
