Many states in the U.S. are continuing to experience extreme cold weather conditions on Wednesday, as a winter storm sweeps across the south coast, prompting schools to close.
This is part of “the historic winter storm along the Gulf Coast and Southeast,” the National Weather Service reported.
Why It Matters
“Dangerously cold” temperatures pose a risk to health, as well as making travel conditions hazardous, the National Weather Service (NWS) warned, meaning the school run could become difficult.

What People Are Saying
National Weather Service wrote in an update on its website: “A rare winter storm impacting the Southern U.S. will move offshore Wednesday morning. Behind the storm, arctic air will continue encompassing the eastern two-thirds of the Nation with only a slow return to normal temperatures expected by the end of the week. Moderate to strong Santa Ana winds and low humidity will maintain Critical fire weather conditions in southern California into Thursday.”
What Happens Next
The National Weather Service noted in its update on the winter storm that its impacts on travel “may linger for several days given the historic heavy accumulations combined with frigid temperatures, as well as the lack of equipment for clearing roads compared to areas further north more accustomed to this amount of snowfall.”
