H-E-B Food Recalls: Full List of Products Impacted

In the past three months three food products have been recalled by Texan grocery store H-E-B.

Whole Fresh American Cucumbers

H-E-B recalled Sunfed Produce Cucumbers on December 1, 2024, because they potentially contained Salmonella.

This recall was a part of a multi-state Sunfed Produce cucumber recall instigated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), after cucumbers distributed between October 12, 2024, and November 26, 2024, might have been contaminated with salmonella.

Per SunFed’s report on the cucumbers from November, the cucumbers were sold by SunFed and other importers and shipped to customers located in the states of Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

They were pulled from shelves following an FDA notification to SunFed that its cucumbers were associated with reported salmonellosis, the illness that can be contracted after ingesting the salmonella bacteria.

Salmonellosis can result in fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and cramping. In some cases it can be fatal, killing about 450 Americans per year.

Craig Slate, president at SunFed said: “As soon as we learned of this issue, we immediately acted to protect consumers. We are working closely with authorities and the implicated ranch to determine the possible cause. Here at SunFed, food safety and consumer health and wellness have been our priorities for more than 30 years. We require all of our growers to strictly comply with the FDA food safety requirements.”

Certain Treehouse Foods Waffle Products

On October 18, 2024, H-E-B recalled some waffle products made by Treehouse Foods, citing concern around the potential for contamination by Listeria monocytogenes.

This H-E-B recall was part of a wider one initiated by the FDA for several hundred waffle products across 25 of Treehouse Foods’ brands.

Ingesting Listeria monocytogenes can cause high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. However, it can be fatal to immunocompromised people, and may result in stillbirths or miscarriages for pregnant women.

A spokesperson for Treehouse Foods told Newsweek in October: “TreeHouse Foods has expanded its voluntary recall to now include all griddle products manufactured at our Brantford, Ontario, Canada, facility. The frozen toaster waffle, Belgian waffle and pancake products are being recalled due to the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. We have no confirmed reports of illness or injury linked to the recalled products.

“We are working with our retail customers to retrieve and destroy the recalled products, and encourage consumers to check their freezers for any of the products subject to the recall and dispose of them, or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.”

BrucePac Ready-to-Eat Meat and Poultry Products

On October 11, H-E-B recalled ready-to-eat meat and poultry products by BrucePac due to possible listeria contamination.

This recall was due to a U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recall that was instituted nationwide and resulted in the pulling of nearly 10 million pounds of BrucePac meat from shelves.

At the time of the recall no cases of illness had been reported in relation to the BrucePac products.
