Former SIE President Shuhei Yoshida Reveals Reason for Avoiding Bloodborne PS5 Update

Ever since Bloodborne was released in 2015, fans have wondered if Sony will update the game or develop a remaster for the PS5. The game’s current state on the console isn’t the most polished, running at an inconsistent 30fps with mediocre image quality. Over the years, fans have frequently requested Sony and FromSoftware to update the game, only to be met with silence.

In his first interview since leaving Sony, Shuhei Yoshida touched on many topics relating to PlayStation’s history with Kinda Funny Games. When asked about Bloodborne’s status and why Sony has never commented on updating the game for PS5, Yoshida said that he believes the reason is linked to FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki’s schedule.

“People wonder why we haven’t really done anything,” Yoshida said. “My theory is because I remember Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, what he created. So I think he is interested but he’s so successful and so busy, so he cannot do it himself and he doesn’t want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory and the PlayStation team respects his wish. I am not revealing any secret information.”

In contrast, Miyazaki has expressed interest in seeing a Bloodborne PC port. Speaking to PC Gamer, the developer said that he would “get in trouble” if he spoke more about the game.

“Obviously, as one of the creators of Bloodborne, my personal, pure honest opinion is I’d love more players to be able to enjoy it,” Miyazaki said. “Especially as a game that is now coming of age, one of those games of the past that gets lost on older hardware—I think any game like that, it’d be nice to have an opportunity for more players to be able to experience that and relive this relic of the past. So as far as I’m concerned, that’s definitely not something I’d be opposed to.”

FromSoftware

The Dark Souls director recently teased more FromSoftware games, but not Elden Ring 2. Instead, the developer is currently working on Elden Ring: Nightreign, a co-op spinoff releasing later this year.

In the same interview, Yoshida also revealed that Horizon: Forbidden West, the sequel to 2017’s smash hit Horizon Zero Dawn, did not sell as many units as the original game.

“I was hoping that the sequel would do even better in terms of sales. The game was bigger and great, but I don’t think the second one did as many units as the first one.”

Bloodborne is available on PS4 and can be played on PS5 through backward compatibility. Community modders have developed an unofficial version of the game playable on PC.
