Will Colin Farrell Return As The Penguin For A Second Season?

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

With the first and only planned season of The Penguin over, fans of the Batman franchise have been asking if there are any plans to bring Colin Farrell back for another season as Oz Cobb.

The limited series, a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, was conceived as an eight-episode series intended to tie into future Batman movies, but fans have been asking for more. As of the end of the eight-episode run, HBO has not yet announced any plans to produce additional episodes.

Farrell, 48, who dons a suit and prosthetic makeup for the franchise, has been vocal about his love for the character and his willingness to return for another season. “I mean, it was only ever designed as an eight-part limited [series],” he told TV Insider, before adding, “but yeah, I mean, I’d be open to anything for sure… I had a great time doing it.”

The outlet also spoke to Reeves, 58, who is also an executive producer on the show, about the conclusion of the first season and speculation that it is setting up a larger story for the characters that could be explored in a second season. Reeves said, “None of that is meant to be a cliffhanger [where] you’re not going to be able to sleep. It’s more like, ‘Hey, this is part of the thing where if you engage in all of these stories, you feel like you go on this massive journey,’ which I think for us is about switching points of view. It’s about empathy.”

Although there are no concrete plans to continue the Penguin’s journey in an episodic format, the option remains on the table. The show’s other executive producer, Dylan Clark, told the outlet, “If we could come up with an idea for what a second season might be, there’s a chance that [HBO CEO] Casey Bloys and the HBO team would want to pursue that.”

Most recently, DC announced that the release date for the long-awaited sequel to The Batman, featuring Robert Pattinson as the titular vigilante of Gotham City, has been delayed to October 2027 — nearly one year after its originally predicted release.
