New York Giants Might Retain Brian Daboll or Joe Schoen: Report

The New York Giants have been a mess in 2024, so much so, that fans were willing to pay for signs to fly around MetLife Stadium. These signs called for team owner John Mara to “fix the franchise.”

A couple of ways that Mara can fix the franchise is to fire head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. Though both have offered some pluses with the organization, they have also offered some big negatives.

These pluses and negatives are reportedly being weighed separately by Mara, and there are rumblings that he might attempt to retain one of the two.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, “Sources: The futures of both #Giants GM Joe Schoen and HC Brian Daboll remain uncertain heading into Week 18. Multiple sources indicate that owner John Mara is evaluating them separately. Exploratory calls and feelers about potential scenarios if one were retained and the other let go have happened in recent days, I’m told.”

It will be interesting to see if Mara decides to retain either one of them, or both. Frankly, both have made their cases to be relieved of their duties.

Daboll is a great leader but has guided the Giants to a paltry 18-31-1 record in three seasons. Some NFL organizations go with the rule of three seasons. A new head coach is granted a few seasons to show some growth, but Daboll has not shown that.

In fact, Daboll has regressed since going 9-7 in 2022. Since then, the Giants have gone 6-11 in 2023, and currently 3-13 in 2024.

One of the biggest missteps is the Giants winning their game against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 17. Though no team wants to tank a game purposely, the Giants could have secured the No. 1 overall pick had they just lost.

This could be the proverbial nail in the coffin for Daboll, especially since the Giants need a franchise quarterback. Their questionable quarterback issue leads to big issues for Schoen.

Schoen and the organization placed a lot of faith in Daniel Jones. The issue with that is Jones did not pan out to be the franchise quarterback the franchise had hoped for.

Jones tore his ACL in 2023 and was able to make it back in 2024. However, his play led to not only getting benched but being cut by the Giants.

Jones signed a four-year, $160 million extension, which became one of the worst deals in NFL history based on what has unfolded since that extension.

Instead of the Giants using their No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to take a highly-rated quarterback prospect like J.J. McCarthy or Bo Nix, they chose to draft wide receiver Malik Nabers.

Nabers is a fantastic receiver, who has emerged as one of the best pass-catchers in the game. Though the pick was meant to bolster the offense behind Jones, it only hampered the team.

The Giants need a franchise quarterback, and Jones was never meant to be that. He is now playing backup on the Minnesota Vikings.

Schoen also allowed star running back Saquon Barkley to leave in free agency, leading to his signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley not only boosted the team’s rush attack, but he secured 2,000 yards and was 101 yards away from beating the rushing record set by former Rams legend Eric Dickerson.

The entire free agency ordeal was captured on “Hard Knocks,” leaving many scratching their heads about how Schoen allowed Barkley to leave.

Both Daboll and Schoen have made their cases to be fired, and time will tell if Mara sees things the same way. For now, fans might just want to hope that a rebuild is coming.
