Moments later, the camera flips to reveal the stunning treasures she unearthed: a curated collection of designer handbags that defined a decade. A pink-border-framed Christian Dior bowling handbag takes center stage, flanked by a compact Fendi baguette and a sleek Prada mini bag—each piece a nostalgic nod to early-2000s glam and the era’s unapologetically bold aesthetic.

Newsweek spoke with fashion stylist Abby Young, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, to unpack the enduring appeal of Y2K fashion.

She said: “The early 2000s fashion era was known for its bold, quirky, yet sexy pairings, like long skirts over jeans, and thin scarves over camisoles.

“Pieces like capris, bejeweled tops/pockets/bags, big brown sunglasses, clashing prints, kitten heels, and especially low-rise jeans and semi-cropped tops were incredibly popular.”

The aughts were heavily influenced by pop culture, with stars like Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Destiny’s Child often seen sporting bags similar to the ones featured in the clip.

Today, fashion history is repeating itself, as Gen Z’s enjoy rummaging through their parents’ wardrobes or thrift stores to recreate these iconic throwback looks.

Young, the fashion stylist and Director of Troora Magazine, told Newsweek: “Right now, we’re in the thick of a Y2K revival because of Gen Z’s curiosity and admiration for the past.”
