Fortnite servers are currently down as Epic Games rolls out its 34.21 update, which includes new content expected to be tied to a long-awaited Mortal Kombat collaboration. The update, going live early on April 1, is part of Fortnite’s annual tradition of themed April Fools events.
How long will Fortnite downtime last?
According to Epic Games’ official Fortnite Status website, the downtime began at 1 a.m. PDT / 4 a.m. EDT / 9 a.m. BST. Matchmaking was disabled 30 minutes earlier to prepare for the update deployment.
While the publisher has not provided a specific end time, veteran players and community leakers expect the downtime to last approximately 90 minutes. If accurate, servers should return by around 2:30 a.m. PDT / 5:30 a.m. EDT / 10:30 a.m. BST, mirroring the brief downtime seen during the 34.20 update last week.
What is in the 34.21 Update?
While Epic Games has been relatively quiet about the full extent of the 34.21 update’s features, several new additions have been confirmed or strongly hinted at by the developer and data miners. Chief among them is the introduction of Scorpion, a central character from the Mortal Kombat franchise, as a new boss within the Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 2 island.
The Scorpion skin is already available in the Fortnite Item Shop, and now the iconic Mortal Kombat fighter is appearing as a boss on the Chapter 6 Season 2 island.

Players who defeat Scorpion will reportedly receive the “Mythic Scorpion’s Kombat Kit” and a new cosmetic item dubbed the “First Blood Medallion.” The Scorpion character is also available as a skin in the Fortnite Item Shop.
In addition to new gameplay mechanics tied to the Mortal Kombat collaboration, the update introduces three themed landmarks on the Fortnite map. Epic is also rumored to be rolling out new quests including the tongue-in-cheek “touch grass” and “land over here and over there,” which seem designed to play into the April Fools timing of the patch. These quests were first spotted by well-known Fortnite leakers @iFireMonkey and @Hypex.
Water Sprites, which had been removed from the game due to a bug, are also returning with this patch, according to the same community sources.
Beyond the confirmed content, leaks suggest that Fortnite is laying the groundwork for future crossovers. These include rumored appearances by Capcom’s Devil May Cry franchise, a return of AC Milan-themed cosmetics, and a possible addition of Negan from The Walking Dead—although none of these are guaranteed to drop as part of the 34.21 update.
Although the update is light on core gameplay overhauls, it delivers a steady stream of new content that supports Epic’s ongoing strategy of rotating pop culture collaborations into Fortnite. These limited-time features not only keep the game feeling fresh for players but also help Fortnite maintain its visibility in a crowded battle royale market.
